This was an awesome experience! I’m not usually one for museums, but this was super cool. There's so much to see and it's all so well done. I loved all the little details and how everything was so interactive. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, regardless of age.
This is a splendid place for a full-day trip! There is so much to see and do. It’s all really well made, keeping all the attention to the details. It’s definitely a place not only for kids but for adults too. There is a lot of walking through but the sight you encounter is worth the entire struggle. The only downside is that it's a bit pricey, but it's definitely worth it!
I recently visited Northlandz and had a blast! The indoor ticket for adults was well worth it. The museum is truly one of a kind, with over hundreds of miniature structures and 8 miles of track model railroad track. It was fascinating to explore the different exhibits and learn about the many different cultures represented. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful in answering any questions we had.
I took a trip up to Northlandz yesterday and it was a blast! The place is gigantic and there's so much to explore. I loved all of the different landscapes and displays. Definitely worth adding to your travel plans if you're in the area.
Had a great time at Northlandz yesterday! I am fond of unique art and it was a great experience for me. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the indoor attractions were really cool. Being a huge fan of model trains, I especially liked that part.
I visited it a couple of days ago and wanted to write about my experience. Truly speaking, it was a great one! Everything there was so eye-catching. There was something surprising at every corner. The thing I was more fascinated about was not merely directed to the miniature wonderland but had many segments to encounter. The Music Hall, Doll museum, art gallery, and hobby shop are a few to name. Overall, the experience was worth it! Recommended!
I recently visited Northlandz with a one-day ticket, and I had an awesome time! The layout of the miniature world is impressive and incredibly detailed. I loved exploring the different sections and discovering all the unique features. There was plenty to keep me entertained for hours! Even though I was only there for a day, my visit felt like an adventure. I highly recommend a one-day ticket to Northlandz to anyone looking for an unforgettable artistic experience!
This expansive miniature world was truly breathtaking. Being a 25 years old antique lover, I could have spent hours exploring the intricate streets, railways, and canals. I loved all the detail in every scene. The One-Day Ticket was perfect because I had enough time to fully appreciate all of the details. It's definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a unique and captivating experience.
I recently visited Northlandz with a one-day ticket, and it exceeded my expectations! There's so much to explore, from intricate model railroads to entire miniature cities. The attention to detail is incredible, and I spent hours admiring all the sites. I also got a chance to take some really amazing pictures! It was such a great experience that I'm already planning my next visit with my family!
Spent about 2.5 hours there today with my wife and three kids. It was an unusual experience, to say the least. There's so much more to it than one would imagine and it's impossible not to be amazed by the creativity, art, sophistication, and passion. There are more than 70 trains running on more than 8 miles of track! Many of the exhibits stretch for 2-4 rooms worth of space and span multiple stories. The complexity grows as you ascend and the bridges become more and more sophisticated. Truly an interesting experience. The staff is lovely to speak with and interact with. The bottom line - it's an experience unlike any other.
This is one of the best train places I ever took my son to. When someone said to give yourself 1.5 hours I didn’t really see why and now I do. This place is endless! So happy we came and will def come back again!
Don't ride by this place for 20 years before stopping in! I wish we would have come in sooner. Very cool place. And super friendly staff. Come soon and come often.
My children (ages 3-16) got bored after the first hour, but I could’ve stayed for days. There are quite literally millions of details, and I tried my best to take it all in but it’s impossible in one day. I met the owner, a very humbling and unassuming man, who has dedicated his life to this project. He says he spends the vast majority of the hours that the place is closed to the public on building/improving the models. It’s worth going just to meet the guy. He actually keeps track (no pun intended) of how many hours he spends on each exhibit. 200 on this one, 300 on that one etc. Although technically this place seems to appeal to children, there is no way in the world they will appreciate the details the way adults would. And don’t forget about the humor. Bruce’s favorite character, Grandma, is very well represented. And I don’t know if I should tell you about Grandma‘s favorite possession, or if I should let you come and see for you yourself. No, I can’t control myself. It’s her outhouse. I’ve read in some of the other reviews that it is dim, the carpet is worn out, and the bathrooms should be updated and cleaner. These are all accurate constructive criticisms and I hope the management will work on it. (last time I was there was over two years ago, this issue may have been resolved by now. I don’t know.) But this review is not about all of that. It’s about one man’s passion and dedication and how he has created something with his two hands that is literally beyond belief. PS Don’t tell my children but I plan on secretly taking a day off sometime and visiting this place myself. That is the only way to do it justice, without the children dragging me along because they’re bored. PPS Here’s a tip if you go with children. Try to ride the beautiful outdoor train before you go inside, because your children will pester you the entire time you’re inside that they want to go on the real train.
Been a longtime fan of model trains since very young. This was a great experience that was totally worth the visit!
We had an amazing experience at Northlandz! The train models were so cool and I would highly recommend this place to my friends and family! The tour was amazing and the staff was very friendly!!! This place was unique and we never imagined it to be this special.
So much fun at Northlandz! My family has a wonderful experience every time we go! My son loved it. My wife loved it. I loved it.
My son said it was the best day of his life! There are trains and cliffs and bridges everywhere! Small-town details and new views around every corner. We had a great time!
Northlandz was worth our 1-hour drive! A great place to visit for children & adults! A must-visit if you are from the tri-state area!
Pros and cons. Pros. The scale is MASSIVE Nice staff Clean bathrooms Easy parking Cons The model quality is "eh" Overall a very enjoyable trip. The models were okay but certainly not of the same quality as George Selios or Gil Freitag. Many of the buildings were not prototypical at all. Still, the massive scale of everything was worth the trip, even if to only see once. Note: kids with no knowledge of physics will LOVE this place since disbelieving is easier for them.
This place is recently renovated and I and my family enjoyed the model trains so much. Highly recommended!
Great place to visit with your family. My husband and I visited on a 90-degree day in August, and the air conditioning worked fine indoors. We spent about 45 minutes in the museum and felt we saw everything. You could spend much more time there if you repeatedly stop to watch the model trains go around the tracks, or if you need to observe every detail in the displays.
A wonderful place to wander and look at the 8 miles of indoor miniature trains. They reopened after many months of getting all the 100 train sets working, fresh carpet, and paint. My family will visit again soon.
So, out of the blue I receive an e-mail from Northlandz a few weeks ago. They acknowledged my disappointment voiced in a previous review, and offered a return visit to my whole family to see how they have improved the place since we had been there last. While I was highly skeptical of how much they could have fixed things up, I do appreciate a business taking responsibility and trying to ensure the satisfaction of their customers, so I decided to give them a second chance this afternoon. Immediately upon entering the newly renovated entrance, my hopes were buoyed. Instead of the dark, dusty and frankly kind of creepy entrance way that used to greet visitors, the main entrance way now takes you straight into a bright and remodeled gift area/snack bar. I showed the young man my e-mailed passes and after a few minutes and visit to the no-longer-disgusting bathrooms (seriously, HUGE improvement here!) with the boys, we were off. The display is still intimidatingly huge, and that's why you're here. It claims to be the largest model train exhibit in the world, and while I can't confirm or deny that, anything bigger would just be overkill. Their claims of engaging in large-scale improvements I can confirm. The entire walkway has been given a fresh coat of paint, the broken and cracked glass sections surrounding the displays have been removed and (mostly) replaced, much of the dirt, dust and debris have been eliminated from the displays, the walkways have been repaired, the damaged roof sections repaired, and there has been a noticeable increase in life-safety equipment and emergency signage. They promised improvements, and they delivered. So, is Northlandz perfect? No, the old girl still has her share of warts, but if you're a model train buff, I can comfortably suggest that you visit. I am thoroughly impressed with how much they have improved in the past few months, and the most encouraging thing is the evidence of ongoing improvements going on throughout the building lead me to believe they may just restore this place to its former glory yet. Rome wasn't built in day, and I'll be patient with the progress here as well. Given how much my oldest loves trains, I'm quite sure we'll be back as he thoroughly enjoyed his visit, and honestly that's what it's all about.
I have mixed feelings about this place. One the one hand, the art in this place is unbelievable. The amazing railways that have been masterfully constructed in the most spectacular ways is undeniable, and no one would argue that it is worth a visit. On the other hand this place is old-fashioned and lacking in other ways. As i was touring the miniature scenes I had this feeling that the scenes are incomplete and that so many things can be added to bring more life to it and make it more exciting to visitors (e.g., besides for the trains chugging along the jaw dropping cliffs there was nothing else moving. They could have added animated waterfalls, boats, bridges to make it more realistic and lifelike). But you gotta take into account the fact that this place was built in the 1970s. So when you walk into this place keep an open mind. This cannot meet the expectation of anyone looking for a modern up-to-date miniature exhibit, but it can surely inspire the art lover and those who appreciate crafts and creativity. That being said, this place is only meant for art lovers. If you are not the person to gush over a piece of art then THIS PLACE IS NOT FOR YOU. My wife for example does not have an artistic fervor and she thought this place was boring as hell! (this is mainly the reason for all those poor reviews) I wouldn't recommend this place for kids either as the trek is long and tedious and they will get bored and tired of this exhibit quickly. I as a grown adult and art lover was able to see the nuance and creativity in every scene, thus i was able to appreciate its full beauty. Just like you wouldn't take your kids on a tour of a newport mansion and expect them to appreciate its art, the same applies to Northlandz in my opinion. This would great pastime for a couple with an appreciation for art. The entire tour should take like two hours.
My wife and myself went there last weekend because we were in the area for a business/leisure trip. This place is amazing and very unique. Even if you are not into model trains ( I am not) this place is cool, if you are into model trains then add another star. This is not a museum but an actual working model rail road that is gigantic and very well put together. The amount of time and work that went into this place must have been immense. Around every corner there was a new scene to see and very nice. Be ready to walk because takes about 3-4 hours to see every thing and does require a bit of walking. If your with an very elderly person be warned there are no spots to sit down and the exhibit has levels( No stairs all ramps) as you walk and enjoy the scenes. Although some of the area scenes can be refreshed with a little updating, only a few spots and pick up the coins that were dropped in by rude guests, the place in a whole is simply amazing. I highly recommend to see this place to enjoy some cool scenes and some imaginative creations with model trains to make the worlds largest railroad. You won't be disappointed.
This was a really interesting way to spend a Sunday afternoon. You can tell that a lot of passion and creativity went into designing the model landscape and buildings. I especially enjoyed the occasional whimsical storylines of Northlandz resident "grandma" and her penchant for outhouses and entrepreneurship. The owner was at the register the day we visited too, so it was nice to chat with him, and I thought his welcoming personality and western style hat perfectly topped off the experience.
Very large model train displays that had very amazing and artistic scenic displays. Many of the model trains were in operation while we were there. My wife and I could have spent more than the 2 1/2 hours we marveled at the set-ups. Numerous realistic bridges, tunnels, and huge tressels.
I don't know much about model trains but I can't imagine there are many places like this left in the world. Seems like a real labor of love and I seem to remember it being in a much smaller location as where it's located now seems like it used to be a banquet hall or event venue. My son loved it and basically just dropped his jaw the entire time because he had never seen anything like it before.
My husband and I, with our friends visited this place last Saturday!! If i had to describe in one shot then it would be "Just awesome".. Splendid experience throughout the tour,.. we were taken aback by the meticulous creation of different sets. Will highly recommend this place.
Our visit started out a little bumpy. Upon arrival, on a Sunday, we found a sign on the door that said to call to let them know you were there. We call and they tell us they would open 10 minutes late. Ok, no problem. They open up, we get our tickets and they inform us they need another 10 minutes to turn all the lights on. Finally, we are in the exhibits and an extraordinary amount of time, effort, and detail went into creating the various scenes. Very intricate. Our 22-month-old loved watching the trains winding around mountains and going over bridges. We did take the outdoor train ride. Very short, unsure if it was worth the 3 extra bucks a person.
With all the negative reviews about the place looking old/dated, I went in with modest expectations and I was thrilled. It took about 90 minutes to cover everything at a decent pace. It's an engineering feat in how they managed to pack so many railway tracks and trains in an indoor space. It's bridges and tracks run into several levels. The railway tracks carry electricity to drive all the trains through all the meandering bridges and tunnels. The experience gets better more immersive as you go past the first 30% of the exhibits.
For just over a week I came over to New Jersey from England. After searching tourist spots in New Jersey Northlandz came up and interested me right away. I made my way out to Northlandz and trust me, it's all worth it!
I went there with my three children ages 4-10 along with my wife and their train displays are amazing. There is a one-way walkway that you follow around the entire building which is very large with multiple levels of highly sophisticated and beautiful displays are moving small scale trains operating in different to-scale realistic locations. It is truly impressive and definetly worth visting.
My husband loves model railroads and had wanted to visit this place for 15 years. We travelled with our son who is 17. My son enjoys working on trains with his dad, but is not quite the enthusiast that he is. I honestly have much less interest in trains. This place is beyond any expectations any of us had. We were there for hours and none of us, even the non-enthusiast (me!) was ever bored. We could have spent twice as much on the tickets and still felt we had gotten our money's worth. The set up is too massive to explain or describe in a review. The builder/owner has a great sense of storytelling and humor so the display also has entertaining stories along the way. We were lucky to be there on a day when few others were and he spent time having extensive discussions with my husband and son. Also on display are huge organs and we were invited up on stage to listen and view the owner play several songs. This was especially interesting for my son who loves the piano. Just an overall amazing day. We will be back soon with extended family. You are on your feet for several hours looking at the displays and if you are travelling with someone who isn't good on their feet for long periods of time they said they had wheelchairs to loan out for self-lead tour.
This railroad layout opened 25 years ago. Once you begin to walk through the facility there is no turning back. We spent about 1.5 hours working our way through the different levels. The majority of the scenic layouts are spectacular....especially the bridges. Lots of trains running...a 28 car oil train moving across long bridges caught everyone's attention. We had a 6 year old girl and an 8 year old boy in our group....her attention dropped off after a hour. There are some humorous notes and layouts included. The facility has a snack bar and the restrooms were clean.
Just remember this is not Disney. If your a fan of trains or have a 5-8 year old that is I think you'll have fun not roller coaster fun but; oh that's neat fun. It's not a big place and does need some fixing here and there. But overall not bad.
Though it is quite far (about 60 miles form NYC) but if you are a train model lover, this distance is all worth travel. The place is great on layouts with about 400 tunnels, multiple bridges, the scenery is breathtaking. However I read many reviews from serious train buffs who looked be bit disappointed with technological display. But those intricacies apart the place is sheer fun to visit and experience. They have a collection of dolls also but it is trains for which you would visit this place. If you take countryside roads to reach Northlandz instead of 202 highway, watching scenic countryside is a bonus.
Always wanted to go here. It was on my bucket list and finally made it. Its on Rt 202 but you travel north of Flemington quite a distance. the train displays are amazing, the scenery and detail is really breathtaking. The only negative is that most of the trains are not running and the few that run have just a couple of cars or just the engine. Some tracks have not seen a train in years. Looks like they are just taking in admissions and not maintaining the displays. It was worth the trip but would not go back for a second time. Allow yourself at least two hours to go through the exhibits.
We went to Northlandz because my 3 year old loves trains of any size or variety. We heard it was the world's largest model railroad display, so how could we not visit it. The shear size and thousands of hours of work is completely astonishing, if you don't understand what it takes to make a model trail lay out or even build a model, you might miss that fact. But I was completely shocked when I found out it took the owner 4 1/2 years working day and night to build the place all by himself. The place is showing its age a little bit, kinda dusty and kinda dingy in places, but all in all its a great place to visit atleast one time, especially if you have a train fan in your family. There is also a mini train ride outside behind the museum. We ended up not taking the outside train ride due to the freezing temp and snow flurries. Your told it takes you about 2 1/2 to 3 hours to walk the entire tour, but we did it a little quicker due to our little guy getting tired of walking, it took us roughly 1- 1 1/2 to get threw it.
We were in New Jersey to go to Six Flags Great Adventure but took a day to rest and we happened to find Northlandz. So grateful that we found it and went! This was years ago and we still talk about it all the time. We spent hours walking through this display and just couldn't believe how it went on and on and on. Came with kids ranging from 2 years to 12 years and they all loved it also. Even more unbelievable is that it was all built by one man! And you will probably meet him when you go there. And if you are lucky you will also hear him play one of his giant pipe organs. He is absolutely fantastic at playing the organ! Do not miss Northlandz.
As adults, my husband and I enjoyed all the scenes, details, miniatures, train/bridge set ups, the mechanics of the scenes themselves, as well as the entire building that was hand-crafted to house it all. A true labor of love that took 4.5 years to build. I shot a ton of photos, and wished I had about 3 more hours to go through it just for the photography alone.
First of all I'll say it's a little dated but the amount of work put on display is just amazing! So many trains , so many details , so many things to see! My kids couldn't stop screaming and chasing the trains.
If you or your child has ever had an HO model train set, this place must be seen! Intricate attention to detail. Imaginative vistas. Sly humor and a true love of railroading. AND if you enjoy music, the owner, designer, builder, Engineer and master of ceremonies is an accomplished organist who often plays to entertain on one of the five or six full pipe organs in the main inside courtyard. This was my second visit. The first ten years ago with two awestruck children. The second with my wife, who enjoyed it just as much.
This was the first time my boyfriend and I visited Northlandz, our minds were blown. Such detail that was put into the model railroading display was amazing. Definitely a great place for railroad enthusiasts to visit.
